In 2000 I turned to making a hand-drawn, multi-media animated film, The Naked Hitch-hiker. Reeling from a crushing marital breakup, a hitchhiker is picked up by an empathetic truck driver. As they drive through a blizzard, they take an unexpected journey through a bizarre mindscape of emotional mechanisms that have played a damaging role in the hitchhiker’s sense of herself. As one festival wrote, “Richly layered, with intelligence, humor, and a big heart, The Naked Hitchhiker resonates with anyone familiar with ingrained discourses and self-doubt.” My interests in both writing and painting combined in this project which was seven years in the making.
